| Living
in Tornado Alley or in traditional hurricane paths meant a family took risks
with their safety. Especially if you have no basement or underground bunker.
However, NOAA and universities around the country have developed the idea
for a Tornado Safe Room. Below are some of the things to consider when
building one.
Concrete Walls should be at least 12" thick. Walls should be at least 8' high. Concrete Ceiling should be reinforced with steel mesh, fiberglass fibers mixed in with cement and 8" thick. Concrete Foundation should be 12" thick and 18" deep. Steel Door should be 2" thick with three hinges and two deadbolt locks with lock handle on the inside. |

Rebar
should be embedded within cement walls and foundation.
Vent Pipe is bent downward to allow air in, but prevent flying debris from egression into safe room. Room should be hardwired for telephone and wires should run out of room for telephone, cell phone, radio and small battery-operated LCD color tv set. Included should be a dynamo wind-up radio like those offered by FreePlay that also offer a wind-up generator to power other devices or recharge batteries. Included should be an emergency aid kit and an LED flashlight powered by alkaline batteries for each member of the family, including a five watt family radio for each member of the household. Room can double as a walk-in closet during non-emergencies. ...see links above for more information. |
