MAKING YOUR HOME SECURE

In the 1950's, many families in the suburbs and rural areas used to leave their doors unlocked. Burglars usually broke into major city homes in poorer neighborhoods. A burglary  in the suburbs and farming country was unheard of. However, in this day and age, even the nicest of areas are subject to thieves entering whether while you are at home or not - even in broad daylight. More and more, we are forced to lock doors when home. So, here are some common sense security measures to protect your home and your family.

  • Do your own home security assessment to see where you are most vulnerable. Correct problem areas.

  • Consider your landscaping - shrubs, fences and other privacy enhancing practices have a downside - burglars have an easier time breaking-in unnoticed with high bushes and fences to block the view.

  • Exterior lighting out of reach will make your place less enticing to unwanted guests.

  • Go beyond the standard door lock - deadbolts make it that much harder to open -especially if they require a key on both sides should be considered when no one is at home.

  • Make sure you also have a good lock on your patio sliding doors.

  • Rather than use standard window latches, locking ones including window stops will make it that much harder to enter.

  • Consider inner window grates as extra protection while on vacation or away from home.

  • A storm door with wrought iron framing and bars offers much better protection than a standard aluminum door.

  • On doors, make sure the hinges are on the inside.

  • If you are building a new home or renovating an older home, reinforce the frame to keep it from being kicked-in.

  • Noise and light make potential burglars very uncomfortable, a good alarm system should include a loud outside siren and a bright flashing light.

  • Doors themselves should be solid wood of at least 1 and 3/4 inches thick or made of steel casing. Any windows shold be at the top of the door rather than along the side.

  • Having a peephole or wide angle viewer is better than using door chains which can snap or break loose easily.

  • Get into a routine of setting an alarm and locking doors before leaving your home.

  • Don't leave keys in a secret hiding place outside the home, burglars are very good at finding them.

  • Don't leave house keys inside a car.

  • Don't mark the keys with a name, address or phone number - hopefully the person who finds it is honest - but the risk is too great that the wrong individual will come across them.

  • When on vacation, leave blinds in normal position, closed blinds are an indicator that you are away for an extended period of time.

  • Turn phones to a low ring, higher will be another indicator no one is home.

  • If away, have your mail and newspapers picked-up, lawn cut and sidewalk shoveled in winter.

  • Use timers to turn on lights and cycle a radio as a way to simulate that someone is home.

  • Work together with your neighbors on a block watch program.

  • If a break-in does occur, get out of the house and to a neighbor a few doors down and call the police.

  • If you can't get out, lock yourself in a room and call for police on your phone or cell phone.

  • If you find yourself face-to-face with a burglar, cooperate and try to remain calm.

The truth is many of us have or will become victim to theft. The best defense is prevention and preparation.

SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS

At House & Cottage we feel strongly about child safety going to and from school as well in school or travels to see friends. Sexual predators are more common than times past - thankfully so is our awareness. We applaud electronic billboard advertising services who will interrupt their commercial messages to agencies issuing alerts when a child is abducted. We would also like parents to consider getting and outfitting children with "pay-as-you-go" cell phones and teaching their children how and when to use them.

The truth is, when a child physically meets up with a predator their life is immediately in danger - the thugs will do what they want with the child and immediately make plans of disposing of that child. Its hard and scary to think about, but its something we all have to address. As parents and grandparents we must work with our children on how to prevent becoming victims. Even teens and young adults need to be concerned as well. Parents need to form an alliance with both schools and police departments.

Awhile back, we were and continue to promote the use of GMRS/FRS family radio service transceivers and scanners as a way to keep children and loved-ones safer. The "extra-strength" Family Radios are a little more expensive and require an FCC non-exam license, but well worth the investment. Brands to consider include Motorola, Radio Shack and Uniden. Scanners to consider are Radio Shack and Uniden Bearcat. Included with the scanner should be a good whip antenna to an outdoor antenna for extended range. Make sure the handheld units are powered by NiMH rechargeable (you'll thank us for it) batteries.

The scanners are generally more sensitive to signals and can be left on during times your children are on their way to school and on the way home. Make sure to have an alkaline battery for backup power for memory and have it set on a "priority" as to the frequency of the family radio transceivers, make sure you have all the frequencies given to FRS radios. Encourage your child's school to participate by having its security officers monitoring a set frequency. If possible, the local police station as well. Train the child how to use the radio as well recharge the batteries on a nightly basis. Include a neighborhood watch to monitor as well.

If a child is being followed or encouraged to come to a car, van or truck, have the child transmit he or she are being stalked. If a child sees a risky situation arise for a friend, call it in as well. First, transmit location, the license number if possible, color and type of vehicle. Encourage neighbors to come to the rescue of the child if possible and of course to head for the nearest business or "at home" neighbor to call police and wait for parents and police to show. Research other ways to keep your children safe from predators as well.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM INTRUDERS

Published by FUN MATES PRESS

SAFETY AT YOUR FRONT DOOR

1. Never automatically open your front door. Make sure you know your caller’s identity before admitting him.

2. If the person at your door is a stranger, ask for identification to be passed under the door. If he is unable to do this, do not admit him.

3. It is advisable to have a wide angle viewer (peep-hole) in the door so that you can check a person’s identity without unlocking your door.

HOME SAFETY

1. All doors in your home leading to the outside should have deadbolt locks.

2. When away at night, leave a light burning.

3. Do not leave a key over a door or under a mat.

4. The single lock on a garage door is inadequate to keep intruders from prying up the opposite side and crawling in. Use a padlock. But never leave it unlocked. This is an invitation to have the padlock removed so that a key can be made, and the lock returned to its position. Later, the burglar returns when no one is home and enters at his leisure, using 'his' key.

5. Mark your valuables and keep an accurate record of all your most valuable possessions.

6. When leaving on a trip:

A. Stop all deliveries.

B. Connect a light to a timer.

C. Notify the police and have a neighbor check your home periodically.

D. Have someone maintain your lawn.

7. Be a concerned neighbor. If you see a suspicious person, car or situation, contact the police.

SAFETY FOR THE APARTMENT DWELLER

1. If you live in an apartment building with an intercom system to the front door, make sure the landlord keeps it in operating order.

2. Never admit anyone unless you are expecting him or know him.

3. Never admit anyone to the building who is there to see another tenant or to deliver something to another apartment.

4. Anyone asking admission so that he can do some work for another tenant should not be admitted, but should be referred to the building’s manager.

5.If you see someone in your building who looks out of place or is acting suspiciously, contact the police.

Knowing what wiring and cable types to use in home construction will determine how well electrical devices will operate as well handling capacity of watts - too thin a gauge can cause the wire to heat up and potentially become a fire hazard by first melting the shielding and then combusting material touching the exposed wire. House & Cottage highly recommends using quality wiring and cable like all other materials to avoid problems down the road. We would further encourage use of a higher gauge wire then is needed in new construction allowing for a safety margin, and to handle new power needs as they are developed in the future. We also strongly suggest sticking with all copper wiring. Aluminum wire which was cheaper to manufacture became popular in the late sixties through early eighties, however it proved to be a fire hazard because the conductive material was prone to overheat in similar applications. Another problem stemmed to the fact that connected dissimilar metals would corrode. It proved a real headache for builders to use since special connectors were needed to bridge different materials together. We encourage builders to stick with copper wiring.

...now, onto the types of different wiring and their uses...

Type "T" Wire is generally used indoors as the the thermoplastic (T) insulation protects against a wide range of temperature ranges.

Type "TW" Wire provides heavy insulation for weather resistance. It is used for outdoor wiring, but IS NOT to be used for direct burial, however can be used in damp places like basements.

Type "THW" Wire has similar characteristics as "TW" wiring, but has proven more heat resistant. House & Cottage reccomends this type over "TW" wiring.

Type "NM" Cable is commonly known as "Romex" and is widely used in residential installations. It consists of two or more individually insulated type "T" wires and a bare copper ground wire wrapped in jute and paper spacers sheathed in plastic. THIS CABLE IS NOT TO BE USED where it would be exposed to moisture. As a matter of safety, House & Cottage recommends using type "UF" cable in most interior and exterior wiring applications.

Type "NMC" Cable is designed for use in damp areas. It usually has a glass wrapping on each wire. The wires are embedded in a solid plastic sheath to resist moisture.

Type "UF" Cable is so tough, its recommended for underground burial. Wires are embedded in tough plastic that simply keeps water out. It is THE CHOICE for outdoor wiring, or use in barns or garages - House & Cottage LOVES this stuff! SE is a similar type of cable that can also be buried.

Armored Cable is known by the name "BX" and consists of conductor wrapped in heavy paper with an outer metal spiral sheathing. The ground wire is generally aluminum because the metal sheathing also acts as a ground. It cannot be used in damp areas. Local Codes may require its use where wiring would be exposed to potential abrasion such as crawl spaces or along the inside of garage walls. House and Cottage cannot reccomend use of this cable since it does not hold up in areas of moisture.
